Strategies to Help Pupils Develop and Monitor their Own Reading Comprehension
Education Endowment Foundation
What is this strategy about?
Teach strategies to help pupils independently take control of their own learning. Introduce each strategy individually and then combine strategies.
What is the purpose of reading comprehension?
Comprehension is the process of reading, understanding and constructing meaning from text. This skill is essential for being able to interpret and analyse written material.
Why is it important for students to monitor their own learning?
Encouraging students to monitor their own learning fosters independence and allows them to identify their strengths, as well as areas of weakness. This will allow them to keep track of their progress and recognise gaps between task goals.
Choose this strategy if you want to...
- Pupils to take responsibility for their own learning
- To help pupils overcome any barriers independently
