What is this strategy about?
When you ask a question in class, you may get the correct answer but, often, there have to be lots of follow up questions in order to get the pupils to the depth of the answer required. Instead of using this CPD training for teachers and give pupils time to plan their response.
How can I encourage pupils to answer questions? You can ask pupils to write down their answers first before asking for their answers. Make sure you give them enough time to think about their answer. This will ensure that all pupils have engaged with the question, even if they don’t end up contributing to the discussion.
Why is it important to give students time to plan their response?
Students will typically give more thought-out, longer responses when the teacher gives them time to plan their responses. This can increase the quality of the answers your students will give to the questions you ask.
